The 2013 World Road Race Championships takes place this year in Florence, Italy, over a difficult course covering 272km. It contains two difficult climbs, the 4.3km Fiesole and 600m Salviati climb, plus an unnamed short, steep hill only 2 kilometers from the finish. It not necessarily a climber course, but it a course suited to riders who are strong, powerful climbers.
One of the craziest Worlds I raced was 1993 in Oslo, Norway. It rained from start to finish. The fans had painted signs all over the road and that, along with the traffic lines in the road, made certain sections like an ice rink. There were crashes continually, from the first lap until the last. There was no telling when the crashes would occur, but when they did it usually spread through the pack like a virus, taking many down. I managed to stay out of trouble that day and stuck with the plan to do nothing until the last two laps. We were working for the young, 21 year old Lance Armstrong. On the final lap, Lance attacked and got away by himself to win . After doing my work for the day, I was dropped with a couple of teammates; we were off the back riding just to finish the race. Along the racecourse there was big screen television showing the race and when we approached where the Nike Long Sleeve T Shirt television was Lance was heading into his final kilometer. We stopped during our race to watch Lance on television cross the finish line and then we resumed riding the last 5 kilometers to Nike Jogger Suit

The following year, 1994, I returned to Worlds, then held in Agrigento, Italy. It was another tough course with a few climbs, and in typical Worlds fashion not a lot happened in the early parts of the race. The Worlds courses that I rode were always hilly and challenging, and any weaknesses were usually exposed after 250km on the bike. The riders would be patient until the final two laps then the strongest would separate themselves from the others. I found this to be a typical format for how the road races would play out. There was nothing anyone could do about it but hope to have the legs to follow the moves at the end of the race. In 1994, Luc Leblanc won, and I finished in 55th.
After 1994, I found it increasingly difficult to remain focused on Worlds. Racing started in February, and with my other goals during the season, I found it impossible to keep mentally and physically ready for a race in October. (Worlds were held in October from 1995 until 2005, when the date moved up to September.) The riders who have excelled at Worlds are the ones who focused on it by taking a break during the season. The earlier dates have also attracted more of the top riders in the peloton to participate.

The World Championships is a different game from the regular season. The riders turn in their trade team jerseys to compete in their national colors. It may be just one day, but it one very important day. The rainbow jersey, awarded to first place, is probably the most prized possession in cycling. It an achievement that lasts a lifetime: The winner can wear the rainbow jersey the following year as world road race champion and the rainbow stripes on his jersey for the rest of his career. It a mark of accomplishment that only six riders in the current peloton can wear: Philippe Gilbert, Mark Cavendish, Thor Hushovd, Cadel Evans, Alessandro Ballan, and Tom Boonen.
They have to try and put their team loyalties aside to ride as one nation and support each other. The meshing of egos and personalities many times clashed during the race. Riders spend an entire season competing against each other to be the best Frenchman, Belgian, or Spaniard at certain races. When you put them together to form a composite national team, those ambitions don just disappear. Alliances can form between trade team members and race strategy between individuals, instead of teams, can completely change the game.
I can remember the few times I rode the World Championships. They occurred earlier in my career than later in my career. As a young rider I can remember very well receiving the red, white, and blue national team jersey to be worn during the race. It a completely different feeling pulling on that jersey compared with a trade team jersey. The idea of representing my country and having the opportunity to try and become world champion are precious moments. Of course I never won, but being a part of the race and knowing what was at stake made those one day races special.
flavor to it. Riders who normally race against each other all year are now teammates for a day. Nike Jacket Pink
