and the dwarfs, including their king, Thorin (Richard Armitage), arrive at Bilbo's tidy home and try to persuade him to join them. ''They make you late for dinner,'' Bilbo objects, and during this extended sequence the 13 dwarfs alarmingly manage to get in sundry pratfalls and two songs. Cate Blanchett's otherworldly elven royal, Galadriel, provides a lone female presence and sensually flirts with Gandalf, along with Saruman the White (Christopher Lee), the great wizard who breaks bad.
A familiar Ring to it
Another flaw is the adoption, for some 3D screenings, of 48 frames a second technology (as opposed to traditional 24 FPS). It presents The Hobbit as a hyperreal visual experience, without a hint of grain. The detail reveals failings of digital effects (a chase scene with a sleigh looks amateurish) and removes much of the burnished feel a fantasy film requires. It is an unwelcome innovation. There are pluses, including Andy Serkis once more casting the spell of the tragic motion captured Gollum, who loses the titular ring to Bilbo, but nothing appears to be at stake. The party repeatedly endures ludicrously long falls without Nike Crew Hoodie

The story is bloodless and, frankly, interminable. ''Something moves in the shadows, unseen,'' Galadriel warns Gandalf. But it's not Sauron, it's Peter Jackson, another all powerful figure in Middle earth whose ability to go unchallenged has become his curse.

injury, and despite fighting orcs, giant trolls and masses of goblins, it's apparent no harm will come to anyone. The first Rings instalment ended with major characters dying; here they're all plucked to safety.
A messy, repetitive film, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey lessens the legacy of The Lord of the Rings, as the Stars Wars prequels did for George Lucas's landmark trilogy. The thought of two more films like this one is worrying.
Does anyone know the Dwarvish for ''Are we there yet?'' It's a query that may come up during the lacklustre moments which are numerous in director Peter Jackson's dispiriting first part of the trilogy of movies dedicated to Nike Coat Red

The idea is to set the scene retrospectively for The Lord of the Rings, creating an undercurrent of stirring evil that will lead to the return of the nightmarish Sauron. But these allusions dilute the tone of The Hobbit it stutters between wide eyed exploits and stern investigation. Rings was the story of a world at war, good versus evil, and that proved all encompassing, but this precursor wants to be a little bit of everything.
The Hobbit is, in essence, a redemptive heist tale. A group of dwarfs, exiles under their nomadic king, plot to return to their mountain home, which had been seized 150 years prior by a great dragon, Smaug. They hope to recover some of their kingdom's treasure (and some pride) and to aid them they have a wizard, Gandalf the Grey (Ian McKellen), a map and a secret key. What they need is a fleet of foot burglar, for which Gandalf nominates the Nike Women Hoodie diminutive hobbit, Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman).
For a film in which greed is viewed with suspicion and depicted as the first step towards downfall, the running time almost three hours for roughly six chapters of the original text is shameful. In returning to the scene of their triumphs from a decade ago, Jackson and his collaborators have surrendered to self indulgence.
Rated M, 169 minutes, opens Boxing Day
The Hobbit. Tolkien's slender 1937 introduction to the fantasy realm of Middle earth has returned as a dull epic, a disappointment in comparison with Jackson's accomplishments with The Lord of the Rings.
Unfortunately, Jackson appears to have no new take on Middle earth. Working with many of the same department heads as 10 years ago he repeats himself: offering helicopter shots of the party trekking across the New Zealand locations, Celtic sounding melodies and Gandalf's benevolent gaze. Yet simple tasks, such as delineating the 13 dwarfs for non devotees, aren't completed. Apart from Thorin and his ageing consigliere, Balin (Ken Stott), they're a mass of beards and bulbous noses.
