Having worked as an interior design consultant for fashion and homewares retailer, Laura Ashley, as well as a social housing company and individual home owners, Jan is adept at creating a stylish look on a variety of budgets.
"Everyone's feeling the pinch as a result of the recession but people still want to make their homes look nice," says Jan. "There are many different needs to consider as each householder is different, so it's all about tailoring a look to suit the client's requirements and wishes."
After leaving the company around eight years ago, John re trained as a joiner and electrician, and the couple moved abroad, buying and renovating houses. Since moving back to Stockport five years ago, they have worked together through their firm, Girl About The House, and have created stylish rooms from living rooms to children's bedrooms.
"It's all about giving a room some TLC at an affordable price.
"Or there may be a pipe or a pillar which can't be removed, but which we can disguise by boxing it in or hiding it in some way.
She has always loved art and design, and began pursuing her creative impulses by customising and making her own clothes, as well as creating soft furnishings such as cushions, curtains and duvet covers.
"I love my work. It's very satisfying to create a look for someone and for them to love it."

Realising she had a knack for interior styling, she started giving informal home makeover advice to friends and gradually began designing professionally.
"We'll then look at ways to work round those requirements and come up with some new design ideas."

when John, 53, became a production manager at a Laura Ashley factory in Wales at the end of the 1990s, Jan too gained work with the company, advising them on how to fit out their stores, making best use of their furnishings and clothing ranges.

"Sometimes people have a favourite piece of furniture or a family heirloom which they want to keep," says Jan, a grandmother of two.
