hit the campaign trail in what proved to be one of the most historic elections in Rochdale's history. Never before had so many political 'big guns' descended on the town.
They needed a replacement quickly and Cyril reluctantly agreed to stand against the sitting Labour MP his old friend and colleague Jack McCann.
Garth Pratt had been their prospective parliamentary candidate for almost four years but in 1970 only months before the general election he stunned the party by quitting.
Afterwards he said: "The alternative to Socialism in Rochdale is Liberalism. Although I am not elated I am extremely happy."
In April 1967 he was asked to stand as a textile candidate in a by election at Oldham West by a number of the industry's employers, with his platform being the textile trade and the problems it was facing at the time.
In July 1972 Jack McCann died and Cyril had to resist yet more pressure to stand.

But his mind was made up and he refused all three requests.
Tory candidate David Trippier had the backing of agriculture minister James Prior, Chris Chattaway, minister for industrial development and home office undersecretary Mark Carlisle.
He was included on the list of candidates for three seats making the short list for one of them.
year when he rejoined the Liberal party, later admitting it was a big decision but justified it on the grounds that it was the Labour Party, not him, that had changed.
Jeremy Thorpe and David Steele came to support Cyril, of course.
For a time Cyril even considered resigning from the Labour party, but relented after a long talk with then Rochdale MP, Jack McCann.
Thorpe told him "Cyril, we think you are the man. If you agree to stand I will personally throw the whole weight of the Liberal party behind you. You can have our best agent, our best Nike Grey Pullover Hoodie

However, he had more than halved Jack McCann's majority and established the party as the second force in the town.
After thinking it over he declined, partly because he wanted to concentrate on his business and he didn't have the time to do the job properly.
