These days, Hawk Springs children attend Southeast School, grades kindergarten through 12, in Yoder, 11 miles north.
The three per summer have been an annual event since 2000, she said, and draw former residents from as far away as Casper, as well as locals, and on this night, a Goshen County sheriff's deputy in uniform. As Cochran cruises between rooms answering questions and greeting people, other association board members work in the kitchen, serving hot dogs and beans from roasting pans and burgers on a pass through counter. No one minds a slight hiccup with the timing of the burgers, which are grilled outside and delivered in a metal pail.
Zavorka hales from Lyman, Neb., exactly on the Wyoming Nebraska border some 22 miles east of Hawk Springs. She met her husband, Joe, in a cow barn when she was 15. They dated for four years and have been married for 62.
"I never expected to still be here," she said, "but now they are working me to death and they won't let me leave."
Cochran said the group hopes to make $1,000 to $1,200 each at the three summer hamburger fries. It costs about $4,500 a year to maintain and continue to make upgrades in the building.

Cochran attended first through sixth grades in the building where she now sits, and graduated from Hawk Springs High School in a brick building just across the street.

"The first hamburger fry they ever did was in the park and they cleared $25," she said.
In the former school's gymnasium/auditorium, the Torrington Fiddlers are preparing to entertain on the stage adorned with velvet drapes. They volunteer their performance, and play tunes ranging from Battle Hymn of the Republic and Amazing Grace to old country and western standards.
"Well, it's not 100, or we could incorporate," said Venita Cochran, current treasurer of the Hawk Springs Community Building Association (HSCBA). "I think probably 50 live here, wouldn't you think, Marge?"

The current HSCBA has been a corporation since 2000, but other groups have taken care of the building Nike Women Tracksuit since it closed as a school in 1965. The high school was closed in 1966, a year after Cochran graduated.
There is no admission fee, just a free will donation jar at the entrance, along with tickets for the 50/50 raffle ($1 each or six for $5), and a multi course gourmet dinner for six ($5 each). The dinner will be prepared by Hawk Springs resident Cindy Muse, who is a "Food Network junkie," and loves to cook. She works for the Department of Family Services in Torrington as an administrative assistant, and has lived in Hawk Springs for four years.

Cochran left Wyoming "the minute I graduated from UW," she says, and spent from 1960 to 2005 in California. After 45 years away, she returned to Hawk Springs in 2005 to care for her mother, and after she died in 2010, she stayed.
The composites range from 1930 to 1966. Boys in the mid 1940s are shown in military uniforms. Principals and school superintendents are frequently included with the graduates.
