The sun will now continue it southward progression leading us into cooler weather while the Southern Hemisphere will be warming up as they heading into spring.
You probably aware of the fact that rain has become a bit hard to come by as of late, but are you aware at just how much different this summer has been than last summer? Last summer was one of the wettest on record, whereas this summer got a little dry on us. Here are a couple of the comparisons between last year and this year.
Enjoy the nice fall weather while it lasts!
On Sunday I got to experience to fork as I traveled along the Loess Hills. As most of you know I am a big and am always cooking up unique and new recipes to try in my spare time. The Loess Hills Culinary Tour was planned in partnership with Monona County Economic Development, Alexander Family Farm, Family Farms Produce LLC, Real Food, Inc., Iowa State Extension and also Flavors of Northwest Iowa. Flavors of Northwest Iowa is a regional networkforfood producers and consumers. Once I heard about Flavors, I joined the planning committee for the Loess Hills Culinary Tour. Afterseveral months of planning, ourfirst tour set out yesterday as 56local food lovers embarked ona 6 hour journey to local farms. We tasted our way through Kim Alexander beef and pastured poultrynear Smithland and Family Farms Produce vegetable farm nearCastana. Iincluded my fresh salsa as part of the menu using freshherbs and vegetables from the farm.
Our start to September wasn typical to say the least. Sioux City hit a high of 91 degrees and it was humid on top of it all. A cold front will move in and cool us off, but cooling off is really what the month of September is all about. Look at how the averages go down from the first of the month the last of the month.
That red is known as a cut off low, because it is from the main jet stream which you notice is well northward into Canada. That means that the cut off low is stationary having nothing to push it along. As the cut off low moves westward on Sunday, we have a few additional clouds, but conditions should remain dry. The jet stream over Canada finally dives a little further south by midweek, helping to carry the cut off low along and allowing for warmer temperatures to make their way in by Wednesday. Shortly after, however, a trough moves through by the end of next week, with more cool weather.
It felt a little like fall these past couple of days, and now the calendar is going to Nike Windrunner Girls be showing the same thing we been feeling. The autumnal equinox arrives at 4:05 am Friday which will be the official beginning of fall. So what does equinox mean? This is when the sun angle is directly over the equator, giving the entire earth 12 hours of daylight.

end of the month is pretty close to what we could be seeing by the latter part of the weekend. So get ready for the changes to take place.
As most of the severe storms will be north, so will the heavier rains as you can see by the rainfall potential.
Preparing for the event was a great part of the fun! I worked with Laura Kuenner, ISU Extension Regional Food Coordinator, Chef Paul Seaman, and Registered Dietitian Sarah Nelson of Hy Vee. We spent the weekend preparing and cooking the fresh food that everyone would be tasting on the tour.
That .31 came on six different days during the month of September as you can see here.
The chance of rain will continue into Friday as cooler air moves in here for the weekend. In fact, by Sunday and Monday it almost going to be feeling cool. Enjoy!

And appropriately enough, we going to be getting off to a cool start Friday morning as patchy frost is going to be a possiblility. A Frost Advisory has been issued for portions of northeast Nebraska.

Overall we see a warming trend in what looks to still be a very quiet 7 day forecast.
That 91 on Sept. 1st was the only time we got into the 90s this month. And 29 was the coolest temperature we saw. Long range outlooks show a trend toward a warmer than average month of October with an equal chance of having a drier versus a wetter October. Time will tell.
And this is going to be a widespread frost and freeze across the upper Midwest.
Temperatures are once again feeling like summer. Wednesday high went up to Nike Sweatshirt Boys
It looking like Thursday is going to be even hotter but then changes will occur. A cold front moves in Thursday night and there going to be the chance of some severe storms from northern Siouxland northward.
September is winding down and it turning out to be one of the driest Septembers we ever seen here in Sioux City. In fact, 2011 is going to tie for the third driest September we had.
By the way, that 9.23 of rain we had in July of 2010 was the second wettest July on record here in Sioux City. This September, we only has .31 through September 20th which is 1.70 below average this month alone. And at this point, there are no chances Nike Coat For Kids
It was a wonderful experience and I am looking forward to all our upcoming events. A Frost Advisory is in effect for Sioux City and all the blue shaded counties in the map below. The purple shaded counties are under a Freeze Warning where they could see temperatures go into the upper 20s for a few hours tonight and end the growing season.
